ASL INTERPRETING SERVICES
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

Utah is where 5 Star Interpreting was built. Salt Lake City is our home market, and we’ve supported organizations across healthcare, legal, education, and workplace settings since our beginning. We provide on-site and video remote ASL interpreting for organizations throughout Salt Lake City and the surrounding Utah communities. As a Deaf- and interpreter-owned agency, we make every placement decision with an understanding of what effective communication actually requires.

On-site interpreting. VRI. CDI support. Scheduled or urgent.

YOUR INTERPRETING OPTIONS

Most assignments call for one of three service types. The right choice depends on the setting, the complexity of the conversation, and how quickly coverage is needed.

ON-SITE SIGN INTERPRETING

An interpreter is physically present for the appointment, meeting, or event. Best for complex, sensitive, or extended interactions where presence and adaptability matter. A common starting point for healthcare systems, courts, and organizations with recurring needs.

VIDEO REMOTE INTERPRETING (VRI)

A qualified interpreter joins via secure video connection. Available 24/7 nationwide. Best for same-day or urgent requests, telehealth visits, short structured interactions, and organizations covering multiple locations across Utah.

CERTIFIED DEAF INTERPRETERS (CDI)

A Deaf interpreter works alongside the hearing interpreter when language needs are complex or communication barriers are significant. Often used in medical, legal, mental health, and law enforcement settings.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES & AUXILIARY AIDS

Trilingual ASL/English/Spanish interpreting, tactile interpreting for DeafBlind individuals, oral interpreting, PSE, and CART real-time captioning coordination.

INDUSTRIES WE SERVE IN SALT LAKE CITY

Salt Lake City continues to grow across healthcare, higher education, technology, and legal sectors. Each setting brings different communication demands, and the interpreting support must match them.

MEDICAL INTERPRETING

Patient visits, intake, discharge, imaging, mental health sessions, ER, surgical consent, specialist consultations, and ongoing care. HIPAA-aware interpreters selected for subject-matter familiarity and accuracy.

LEGAL INTERPRETING

Attorney-client meetings, depositions, court hearings, mediations, probation meetings, and government proceedings. Accuracy in legal settings is not a preference. It is a requirement.

EDUCATION INTERPRETING

K-12 classrooms, IEP and 504 meetings, early intervention programs, parent-teacher conferences, tutoring, campus events, university support. DHH programs demand consistent, qualified coverage.

DENTAL INTERPRETING

Cleanings, orthodontics, oral surgery consultations, procedures, and post-treatment instructions where patient understanding matters.

WORKPLACE INTERPRETING

Onboarding, HR conversations, staff meetings, training sessions, interviews, and presentations. Supports ADA compliance in employment settings.

CONFERENCES & LARGE EVENTS

Multi-interpreter coordination for conferences, seminars, corporate events, expos, and gatherings throughout Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Front.

WHEN TO REQUEST A CERTIFIED DEAF INTERPRETER

A standard ASL interpreter handles most assignments well. Some conversations require more.

A CDI is not an upgrade. It is the appropriate level of support for certain situations.

A Certified Deaf Interpreter works alongside a hearing interpreter when communication barriers are more significant. CDIs bring lived Deaf experience, regional language familiarity, and the ability to work with communication styles a hearing interpreter may not immediately recognize.

Consider requesting a CDI when:

  • The Deaf individual uses non-standard ASL, regional dialects, or home signs
  • There is limited formal language exposure or language deprivation
  • The setting involves trauma, mental health, or crisis communication
  • Legal accuracy is critical, and any misinterpretation carries consequences
  • The individual is DeafBlind and requires tactile communication

In legal settings, especially, a CDI helps ensure every question is clearly understood and every response is accurately conveyed. That layer of verification is not optional when the stakes are high.

For a full explanation of when and why CDIs are used, see the guide to Certified Deaf Interpreters.

ADA COMPLIANCE IN SALT LAKE CITY

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), organizations in Utah must provide effective communication for individuals who are Deaf, hard of hearing, or DeafBlind. That obligation applies to healthcare providers, legal teams, employers, schools, and government agencies throughout Salt Lake City and the state.

Effective means fully understood. Not present. Not attempted.

Appropriate auxiliary aids and services include:

  • Qualified ASL interpreters, on-site or via VRI
  • Certified Deaf Interpreters when communication barriers are significant
  • Tactile interpreting for DeafBlind individuals
  • Real-time captioning (CART)
  • Other access formats based on the individual’s communication preferences

The Deaf or hard-of-hearing individual has the right to determine what communication method is most effective for them. The responsibility to provide it rests with the covered entity.

For a full breakdown of what the law requires across healthcare, legal, and workplace settings, see the guide to ADA compliance for Deaf communication access.

When communication is accurate and complete, people can:

When communication is intentional and accurate, access becomes meaningful. When it is not, the consequences show up in outcomes.

In many settings, yes. The ADA requires covered entities to provide effective communication for individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing. For complex interactions in healthcare, legal, educational, and workplace settings, a qualified ASL interpreter is typically the appropriate auxiliary aid. The standard is effectiveness, not simply the presence of a communication tool.

A CDI is recommended when the Deaf individual uses non-standard signing, has had limited formal language exposure, is DeafBlind, or when the conversation involves mental health, legal risk, or complex medical decisions. If you are not sure, tell us about the assignment, and we will help you assess it before the appointment.
