VIDEO REMOTE
INTERPRETING (VRI) SERVICES

Qualified ASL interpreters, connected by video, when on-site is not the right fit.

Video Remote Interpreting connects a Deaf consumer and a hearing person to a qualified ASL interpreter through a live video link. It’s the right call for short, routine encounters when the technology and setup are reliable. We provide VRI on-demand and on a schedule, with RID-certified interpreters vetted for video work.

CHOOSING BETWEEN VRI AND ON-SITE INTERPRETING

VRI fills a real gap in access to communication. Sometimes an interpreter cannot be present quickly enough, or the setting does not call for on-site services, given cost and lead time. VRI covers both cases with a qualified interpreter over video. Used in the right context, it works well. Used in the wrong context, it produces the appearance of access without the substance.

WHEN VRI IS THE RIGHT CALL

VRI works well when the encounter is short, the content is contained, and the technology can carry the communication without dropping anything important.

  • Short medical encounters: vitals, intake, basic check-ins
  • Front-desk and service counter interactions
  • Quick internal business meetings between coworkers
  • After-hours coverage when on-site cannot arrive in time
  • Brief administrative consultations
  • Hospital triage and initial assessment before on-site coverage arrives

WHEN YOU NEED ON-SITE INSTEAD

Some of the most important communication access situations are not VRI situations. Calling for VRI in these settings is not a cost-saving measure. It is a quality failure.

  • Mental health appointments (therapy, psychiatric evaluations, crisis intervention)
  • Complex medical conversations such as oncology, surgical consents, and pediatric care
  • Emergency rooms beyond initial triage
  • Legal proceedings of any complexity
  • Any setting calling for a Certified Deaf Interpreter
Multi-party meetings with multiple Deaf participants
  • Any situation where the Deaf consumer prefers on-site

WHAT YOU NEED ON YOUR END

You’ll need a device with a camera and a screen large enough to view comfortably, set at eye level. You’ll also need a connection fast enough to carry full-motion video without lag. That second requirement matters more than it sounds. ASL carries meaning through facial expression, fingerspelling, and hand movement. Lag drops all three.

Many organizations already have what they need. If you are building a room specifically for interpreted appointments, we can advise on camera placement, lighting, and screen size. Those three details decide whether the interpretation is usable.

WE WORK ON THE PLATFORMS YOU ALREADY USE

Many VRI providers require you to adopt their app, their hardware, or their portal. We don’t. Our interpreters join the video platform your organization already runs. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, or a system built into your clinical or case management workflow.

No procurement cycle for new software. No IT security review of an unfamiliar vendor app. No training staff on a tool they’ll use twice a year and forget in between. You send a meeting link. The interpreter joins.

If your organization needs platform recommendations, we’ll help you evaluate options in line with your privacy and accessibility requirements.

5 STAR INTERPRETERS

Every interpreter we assign to VRI holds RID certification and works within the RID Code of Professional Conduct. Interpreters are vetted specifically for video work, which is a different skill from on-site interpreting. Framing, pacing, and managing turn-taking through a screen all change how an assignment runs. Not every excellent on-site interpreter is also an excellent VRI interpreter, and we book accordingly.

For medical and legal assignments, we match by subject matter experience, not just availability. Terminology fluency determines whether the interpretation holds up under pressure.

Healthcare and medical clients receive HIPAA-aware setups and Business Associate Agreements where required. Coordinators are available during business hours for scheduling, recurring assignments, and any issues that come up mid-session.

ADA COMPLIANCE AND VRI

The ADA does not specifically require VRI. It requires effective communication. VRI is one acceptable way to provide it when the setup actually supports the necessary communication. DOJ guidance sets standards for bandwidth, screen size, lighting, audio, and trained staff. VRI that does not meet those standards is not effective communication.

Our post on ADA compliance for Deaf communication access covers the legal framework in more depth.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Video remote interpreting, or VRI, connects a Deaf consumer and a hearing person to a qualified ASL interpreter through a live video link when everyone needs to communicate in real time. The interpreter joins remotely by video while the other participants are typically in the same physical location.

Video remote interpreting is an interpreting service your organization arranges and pays for when a Deaf person and a hearing person need to communicate, usually in the same location. Video relay service is a federally funded telephone service that allows a Deaf person to make phone calls through an interpreter. VRS cannot lawfully be used in place of VRI for in-person appointments.

No. 5 Star Interpreting interpreters join the video platform your organization already uses, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Webex. There is no proprietary app to install and no separate portal to learn.

The ADA requires effective communication rather than any specific method. VRI can satisfy that requirement when bandwidth, screen size, lighting, audio quality, and staff training meet DOJ standards, and when VRI is appropriate for the setting. Choosing VRI when on-site interpreting is required does not meet the obligation.

Request an on-site interpreter for mental health appointments; complex medical conversations, such as oncology and surgical consents; emergency care beyond initial triage; legal proceedings; any setting that calls for a Certified Deaf Interpreter; meetings with multiple Deaf participants; and any situation where the Deaf consumer prefers on-site. Deaf consumers requesting on-site interpreters instead of video interpreters may know something you don’t about their ability to understand or interact with a video interpreter. When in doubt, trust consumers that they know what works best for them.

Availability depends on the time, setting, and required qualifications. For same-day or unscheduled requests, contact us directly, and we will confirm availability immediately rather than leaving you waiting in a scheduling queue.

Yes! Every interpreter assigned to a VRI appointment holds a certification or qualification appropriate for where they live, including but not limited to: RID certification, Utah Interpreter Program certification, or Texas’s Board for Evaluation of Interpreters, and all work and abide by the RID Code of Professional Conduct, and are vetted specifically for video work. Medical and legal assignments are matched by subject matter experience.

5 Star Interpreting can serve any state, but may be subject to local legal requirements regarding qualification or certification

5 Star Interpreting has been the primary provider of American Sign Language - English interpretation for The Sundance Film Festival for the past two years. Their services have been absolutely top notch. The coordination of an exhibition to this scale was eased knowing that 5 Star would take the care to understand our event spaces, screenings, content, clients, etc. to consider the right interpreter for the job. We're proud to work with a Utah local Deaf/CODA owned business that utilizes both the consumer and interpreter perspective throughout all aspects of their operations. Extra big shoutout/referral for Nathan Suitter, who's skill and professionalism has made him our interpreter of choice. Smiles.

Our agency had a client who requested an ASL interpreter for a meeting so I reached out to 5 Star Interpreting. They were very quick to respond, easy to schedule with and their prices are great. The interpreter they sent was professional and friendly and it was a great experience. We will be using them again.

I work in Texas and had to plan to get ASL interpreters on-site for a Utah-based event this year, although I've never worked with ASL interpreters before. Cody and his team at 5 Star were an absolute pleasure to work with. Highly responsive, quick to help out and explain the different nuances of ASL to a non-signer (without making me feel like an idiot), and extremely professional and helpful. They thought of everything: from their travel, to the interpreter's on-site meals, to their attire, and even convenience of payment after the event. I would highly recommend them if you're looking for a team that will work seamlessly with your event and provide a high-quality interpreting experience with a low-hassle and clearly communicated set-up.
